What’s the MDA got that I don’t? (Part 3)

The next value-adding software that T-Mobile USA has put in their MDA version of the HTC Wizard is the My E-Mail Triggers application. The application lets you set-up your email, download your email settings from the My T-Mobile website (if you’ve already set up accounts there), and lastly you can configure the E-Mail triggers. The cool thing about using T-Mobile’s My Email service is that once you set it up with E-Mail Triggers your email will automatically download when a new message arrives. The downside to this is the way it works. You’re accounts are set up in the My Email section of the T-Mobile website. When the server detects a new message in any of the email accounts you set up here, it will send an SMS text message to your phone with a special code in it. When that message is recieved by the email triggers program, the MDA automatically (and silently) logs on to the specific email account and downloads all new messages.

You might say, well when the AKU 2 comes out I’ll be able to do that without text messages with my Exchange 2003 SP2 Server. That’s true, but here’s where the My Email Triggers shines… if you log into “My T-Mobile” on your desktop and go to the “My E-Mail” section, there’s an area where you can create specific “Alerts” with specific criteria. You can set this up so that an email trigger is only sent to your phone when certain criteria are set. For example, maybe you only want your MDA to download email when an important message from your family members or coworkers arrive. You can create alerts based on the priority, the To field contents, the subject line, the From field contents, and the CC field contents.

By using these Alert filters, you can cut down on how often you’re interupted by push emails and ensure that only the ones that are important to you will trigger a send/recieve. Do you really want your handheld device to vibrate or ring everytime you get a spam message?
