Windows Embedded Handheld: Now We Mean Business

Microsoft just keeps on cranking out mobile device operating systems. So far this year we’ve got the new Windows Mobile 6.5.3 (Professional & Standard Editions), Windows Phone 7, Windows Embedded Compact 7, KIN, and now Windows Embedded Handheld with Windows Embedded Handheld 7 coming next year.

As you saw here earlier this week, it was unclear as to wether Windows Phone 7 means business or does not mean business. Microsoft must have read those articles and decided to make something that really does mean business, so that’s what Windows Embedded Handheld is going to be. Mainly it sounds like the new OS will take all the good things that businesses have been using on Windows Mobile for the past decade and maintain backwards compatibility with their custom applications while also beginning to transition to the newer Silverlight-based platform that we’ll see in Windows Phone 7.

What do you think? Is this the right thing to do even though it means a bit of fragmentation among Microsoft’s mobile offerings?
