Lately there have been some reports of the new HTC HD7 having a pink tint to its photos. We decided to test it out on a white door and compare the images with the same pictures from the HTC Surround and the old HTC HD2, as well as a professional Nikon D300 DSLR.
Above you’ll see 100% pixel-for-pixel strips of images taken with each device. What’s interesting is that while the HD7 does have a pink tint, it’s not always that way. Our first shot with the white door showed a distinct blue tint. Subsequent photos did show the pink tint however. We also saw the same tinging on our HD7 review test shot with flash.
The HD2’s pink tint problem is slightly different and only tends to happen towards the center of the camera frame. Turning the flash on for the HD2 gave us a totally different color cast problem, with a heavy yellow tint. The HTC Surround had better color quality, but its flash was significantly weaker and caused vignetting at the edges. Even the Nikon D300 is not terribly accurate with its automatic white balance feature.
