Some Samsung Omnia 7’s have been experiencing brick-like behavior when attempting to install Windows Phone 7’s first update. The update was designed to improve the Windows Phone 7 update process so that subsequent updates would go smoothly. According to WinRumors, Microsoft has “identified a technical issue with the Windows Phone update process” but that the issue only impacts a small number of phones. “In response to this emerging issue, we have temporarily taken down the latest software update for Samsung phones in order to correct the issue and as soon as possible will redistribute the update.”
Hopefully, Microsoft will have this all fixed in a few days and your Samsung phones will be all set for future updates.
If you’ve got a bricked Omnia 7, a commenter named Gertjan Banga on the WinRumors site has a possible solution:
My phone was bricked to. Solved it.
Downloaded Zune software again and try to install it (on my computers it stucks on searching for updates, but it does something).
Downloaded a standard ROM from the internet for the Omnia 7. And update tool from Samsung and latest USB drivers from Samsung.
Take out the battery, connect the phone with the USB cable to your PC while holding the volume up and camera keys. Phone will start in download mode.
Start the Samsung update tool and open the downloaded ROM into it. Start the update and after a few minutes you are up and running.
