API Mapping Tool Makes It Easier To Port iOS Apps to WP7

Microsoft released an API Mapping tool that helps iPhone developers learn about API’s with similar functions on Windows Phone 7. The tool can be found at wp7mapping.interoperabilitybridges.com. Basically you select from a list of iOS developer programming interfaces on the left and then you’ll see listings of Windows Phone API’s on the right along with links to documentation for both the iOS programming interfaces as well as the Windows Phone interfaces. It’s not currently complete, so if you have any ideas or tips that you think they should add, there’s a forum here. There are plans to create a similar tool for learning cross-platform development between Android and Windows Phone as well.

At Microsoft’s Interoperability Bridges site, you’ll also find lots more documentation about cross platform mobile app development as well as developer success story videos.

It sounds like Microsoft is really putting a lot of effort into making it easy as possible for developers to make apps for Windows Phone 7 even if they’ve already invested a lot of time into creating Apps for Apple’s iOS. Do you interpret this as Microsoft trying to convert Apple developers to Windows Phone? Or is it really just an attempt to teach developers to be more platform independent?
