Chronicles of a Windows Mobile User Gone Palm Pre (part 4)

I have been using Windows Mobile and Pocket PCs as my MP3 and media players since 2000. They were the first pocket computers to have most of the capabilities that you see in all of the smartphones these days. For that reason, I have never used iTunes for my media library. It never made sense for me to carry an MP3 player and a phone as separate devices especially since even early Windows Mobile devices …

Chronicles of a Windows Mobile User Gone Palm Pre (part 3)

One of the more unique features about the Palm Pre is it’s WebOS user interface. It’s a huge departure from Palm’s more well-known Garnet OS that was first introduced in the 20th Century. It’s also quite different from the Windows Mobile OS that Palm has been shipping on its high-end phones lately. The coolest thing about the WebOS is its task switching and application closing interface (task manager). For years, Palm has been adamant that …

Chronicles of a Windows Mobile User Gone Palm Pre (part 2)

In part 1 I talked about the initial set-up experience on the Palm Pre and my frustration with the Exchange set up. A guest commenter mentioned that you can actually install custom security certificates on the Palm Pre. It’s a bit hard to find. You have to go to Device Info, then “More Info”, then the menu in the upper left, then “Certificate Manager”. From there you’ll be able to install a certificate if you’ve …

Chronicles of a Windows Mobile User Gone Palm Pre (part 1)

When I first booted up the Palm Pre with Palm’s WebOS, it made me create a Palm Profile account and then walked me through a short tutorial followed by a video about how to use the Palm WebOS operating system. The tutorial makes you practice using the gesture area to invoke “Back” commands as well as teaches you about closing applications and switching between them. It’s similar to what HTC has done with their TouchFLO …

Touch-Screen QWERTY Keyboards Are Lame

Since the T-Mobile G1 Android phone was upgraded to Android 1.5 last week, I had a re-occurance of an epiphany I had once long ago… 1999 to be exact. Back in 1999 I got my first Windows CE Palm-sized PC. It was the very feature-rich Uniden UniPRO PC100, and like the Palm-Pilot’s of the time, it didn’t have a hardware keyboard, just a touch screen. Its default input method was an on-screen QWERTY keyboard where …

Do You Even Use Multiple Calendars?

Palm’s launch demo of the new Palm Pre’s multiple calendar support was pretty impressive. You can select from multiple Gmail calendars, multiple Exchange calendars, and a Palm Profile calendar. This is similar to Android’s support for multiple calendars (except Android only supports Gmail). The Palm Pre allows you to create appointments in each calendar account separately and the appointments will only sync with the account you selected. My questions is, do you or would you …
