Sick of the Windows Mobile UI? Try Windows CE 5!

Microsoft’s embedded mobile device operating system of choice used to be something called Windows Compact Edition. Everything from thin clients, netbook sized devices, and PDAs used to run Windows CE with a Windows 98 style user interface. In 2000, the “Pocket PC” operating system was released to compete with the Palm OS. The Pocket PC OS was essentially a new easier-to-use more-simplified shell running on top of the Windows CE core.

But you know… that default Windows CE shell is kind of cool! It’s just like Windows. You know… the Start menu is in the bottom left where it’s supposed to be, there’s a desktop with icons on it, and even a task bar showing open applications that you can easily switch between!

No2Chem of Nuerom.com is working on a little hack to bring the Windows CE 5 Explorer shell user interface back to Windows Mobile devices. He’s got it running on an HTC Titan device. No word on how Pocket Outlook and Mobile Office are working or when/if a how-to will be released to the public. I wonder if Pocket Access is going to work.
