“The UMPC opens up a wider array of computing scenarios, including easier in-car use, or walking down a hall between meetings. ”
“Although it may appear to be, the UMPC is not intended to be a replacement for any other device.”
Betanews.com has published an interesting article about the Ultra Mobile PCs codenamed Origami. These devices will be bigger than Pocket PCs and smaller than Tablet PCs. Alot of people wonder why you would need this. For me I think the key is in-car use. You’re not going to be using a big Tablet PC or Laptop while driving, and Pocket PCs tend to be too small for an in-car dashboard system. With an UMPC, especially the ones that will include GPS recievers, you could have a dock on the dashboard of your car where the UMPC would sit and control both navigation and entertainment systems. The touch screen interface with large buttons will be a huge advantage for in-car use as well. You could even undock it and hand it to the kids in the back to play a video game or watch a movie.
